HURRICANE EARL and HURRICANE DANIELLE!! REMEMBERING 9-11.
GWOT REDEDICATION on 9-11-22.
RIP QUEEN ELIZABETH.

SIX DAYS OF WAVES FROM HURRICANE DANIELLE & EARL.
I suppose I owe you all an apology for being late. It's not like I'm late all the time. In fact, if I go back in my memory bank, I think I've been late maybe 4-5 times in the last 18 years. But here's the deal. As most of you know, the Blog is from Sunday to Saturday every week.

But EARL hit on Friday and went right through to Monday. I couldn't just stop midway through the swell to get the Blog up. Especially if the Blog is all about EARL. So I made the decision to keep shooting until EARL's last gasp. And as a result of that decision, you have 10 galleries of EARL in this week's Blog. You can thank me later. Actually, thank the other photographers as well. This week's Blog was a community effort.

This is Cam MacLeod on Friday morning 9-9-22. He was one of the only people I knew out there. But this was the first real day of EARL. I could see the long period swells making their way to the beach that morning. It was so glassy (almost the entire swell), and very consistent. Keep in mind that Cam is 6'7" so the waves were clearly starting to get bigger with each pulse.

I shot this on Saturday morning September 10th, 2022. Not sure who this is, I am sure of what it is though. This is what happens when AIRS go bad. He's gonna land in some shallow water right there, with some not so friendly rocks just below the surface. When the water temps are super warm, and the tropical air permeates the air temps, people tend to get looser in their approach to surfing. This is not something you'd typically see on a cold winter's day.

This is my son Max on Friday September 9th, 2022 on Nantucket Island.

This is Dougie Wright on Sunday September 11th, 2022. "Fresh" timed his visit back home perfectly. So stoked that he got this swell.

And these boys drove all the way up from Cape Hatteras. Must have been quite the treat for them surfing point breaks as opposed to sand bottom beach breaks. I shot a lot of video of these guys. They could surf. The EARL video will be in next week's Blog.

What a pleasant surprise seeing this old friend again. Ryan Schnell was in town from California documenting the EARL swell. Ryan is one hell of a surfer, but he's been doing more shooting the surf these past 5 years or so than actually surfing. But you know what? He can shoot as good as he surfs. He's got a killer gallery down in the photo section.

21 years ago today, we were all out surfing Hurricane Erin. Today we were all out surfing Hurricane Earl. Most of you who follow this Blog know of the annual 9-11 Tradition that we (surfers) all started 20 years ago. We all meet at the same spot we were at, the day the world came to a stand still. Every 9-11 a small handful of surfers show up at the surf spot we were surfing that day to pay our respect to those who perished that day. From left to right: Duffy, Johnny, Tony, myself, and Markey. Call it an unwanted tradition.

Let it be known, that we surfers remember. And we will never forget.
Tyler and Markey send out a gesture to Al Qeada on 9-11-22.

The 9-11 GWOT ceremony at AMERICAN LEGION Post 35 on Sunday September 11th, 2022 was very well attended. Of all the things I have done in my life, this is the one I am most proud of. Spearheading this monument and this somber observance back in 2006. Including, designing the monument itself. The only monument of its kind, in the entire nation. Each year on 9-11 we add the names of the newly fallen from the state of New Hampshire in the Global War On Terrorism.

I was Commander from 2001-2014. I was asked by a reporter back then “Ralph what are you going to do when the war on terrorism is over?” My answer back then, is the same answer today. “There are terrorists who have not been born yet, that our children, and grandchildren will be fighting in the future.” In other words. The Global War On Terrorism is forever.

Looking back on this project and the men who worked with me. Joe Kutt, John Barvenik, Jimmy Cushman, Arny Platridge, and the late George Masten.
I have nothing but fond memories of those days. I'm happy to report that our current Commander Berk Bennett, has carried that torch and kept this somber Observance and Remembrance alive. The whole seacoast community comes out every 9-11 to pay our respect to those who have died fighting in the Global War On Terrorism since September 11th, 2001.

"HONOR AND RESPECTING THE FALLEN HEALS ALL WOUNDS."

From the Ed O'Connell galleries. This is "yours truly" surfing the wall on September 8th, 2008. Unbeknown to me, Ed was sitting in the Jetty using his 500mm lens and was picking off shots left and right. To this day, it's one of my favorite pics of me surfing. Thank you for that Ed. NOW FOR SOME LOCAL AND NATIONAL NEWS

Thanks to your generous donations, we are closing in on $45K in under a week. I know that I speak on behalf of the entire staff at Cinnamon Rainbows, when I say, "Thank You from the bottom of our hearts."
It's all so truly humbling. Because of you, there's light at the end of the tunnel. And it gets even better, there's going to be a POP UP SHOP in the parking lot! Stop by the shop and pick up whatever gear you need under the tents in the parking lot. Meanwhile, I'll see you on the beach. If you spot me shooting pics and vids, come on over and say hello (just wait until I put my camera down). And whatever you do, try not to walk in front of my lens. (ha ha).

Again, Mahalo my brothers and sisters who made such generous donations. You guys are the freaking best!

The HARVEST MOON coincided with the Hurricane Earl Swell. And it was every bit as breathtaking as you could imagine. I took this pic with my cell phone. So the quality is mediocre at best. It was one hell of a weekend.

Unless your a Patriots fan...ugh.

The Patriots played the Dolphins on OPENING DAY 9-11-22. They lost in more ways than one. The only real highlight of the game was when they focused on Mike Tyson in the booth with Robert and Jonathan Kraft. This is some bizarre shit.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II passed away last week. She was an exceptionally gifted woman who did so much in her 96 years.
The whole world is mourning her passing.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
So if I had to guess, I would imagine that most of the readers of this Blog have no idea who KSM is. Some people actually thought it was Saddam Hussein. It's not. Khalid Sheik Mohammed is the man who came up with the concept of flying airplanes into designated targets. In short, it was KSM who thought that flying fully loaded jet airplanes, filled with jet fuel into tall buildings, would cripple America. He was, as it turned out, only partly right. It did cripple us, momentarily, but it also did something else. It filled us with a terrible resolve to fight back.
And we've been fighting back ever since. So while he still sits in GITMO day after day, living in a boring existence, we have continued to hunt down his cohorts, and have systematically killed them. One after another. And we will continue to hunt them down, as long as they exist. REMEMBER 9-11. Have a nice day Khaliddy (NOT!)

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).
*Note to self -must pick up a case of Korans at Home Depot this week.

Yesterday-
TWENTY ONE YEARS AGO TODAY.
(Below) The waves from Hurricane Erin were the kind of waves we surfers dream about. Perfect 6' grinding waves pouring onto the beaches and point breaks up and down the east coast. A day that one of us will ever forget.
Before the clock hit high noon, none of us could think about surfing. This day changed the world forever.
Video frame grab by Ralph

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal. Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.

PADDLE FOR ROBIN 8-19-22.mp4 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Robin Rowell was a New Hampshire and California Surf legend. The Memorial Surfer's Paddle was held on August 19th, 2022 at his favorite break in New Hampshire. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Keep paddling Robin...keep paddling. We will meet you out in the lineup, when we cross over the Rainbow Bridge. We love you.

NINETEEN EIGHTY TWO
The year was 1982. A handful of friends surfing the Wall.
Featuring: Robin Rowell, Kevin Grondin, Mike Paugh, Billy Ritchie,
and yours truly Ralph Fatello
Music is by Roxy Music

FIRST SUMMER SWELL OF 2022.mp4
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo. This was the first official swell of the summer of 2022. It hit on the 24th of June and lasted 5 days. The two best days were Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. The water was intoxicatedly warm. In fact it was 70 degrees on Sunday. That's pretty damn warm for June. The music is a song I wrote in 1982.
I remember writing it in the summer of 83 and David Robinson and I worked out the arrangement and he produced it at Syncro Sound. This was to be one of the follow up songs to The VINNY LP that he produced.
I remember doing those cool ascending and descending background vocals. David and I have worked well together with all three of my bands. That's David playing the Linn Drum and my brother Johnny plays a really cool guitar
solo at the end of the song. *On a sad note, the day I shot this video, a biker was killed by a drunk driver in broad daylight.

There's a scene of bikers at the end of this video. I wonder if he was one of them. RIP David Penney.

MAMA'S DAY 2022.mp4 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

From Sunday May 8th to Friday May 13th, 2022. Five days of overhead waves. Seriously, 5 days worth. It never really cleaned up, but surfing overhead surf in May? Nobody was about to complain. The whole Mother's Day theme was carried along with the soundtrack. I used my own music that I wrote and recorded from the mid 70's.
The VINNY Band was a popular Boston/New England band in the 70's-80's. These songs? They crack me up. There's nothing about them that sounds like surf music to me. But that's what makes it so funny. It kind of does fit the vibe. Three of these songs were produced by the super talented Steve Sadler.

The highlights? Billy Leibundgut's drone footage adds to the overall vibe. And my favorite? The version of my song MAMA MIA by Steve Sadler is brilliant. And PLEASE try and watch to the very end where some of the boys wish their moms a Happy Mother's Day. It's all good.
As always, I hope you enjoy it. All 25 minutes of it. Watch in 1080 or higher

WILD WINDY WEDNESDAY.mp4 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Wednesday April 27th, 2022 was a WILD and WINDY day. The swell filled in from late morning until dark. The locals that were around, scored some fun waves. This has been a pretty good Spring so far.
Music is by the Adobe Library.

THE SOU'EASTER.mp4 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The surf reports all had their Purple Bars indicating Large surf and a few were in the RED. Oh hell yeah, it was on, and the night of the 18th, the winds began to howl. Howling for it's darling. By morning it was gusting 50 to 60 mph straight out of the east and southeast. While some were calling it a Nor'easter, it was not. This was a SOU'EASTER. And on April 19th & 20th, 2022 the Northeast were getting it with both barrels. The only real Nor'easter involved with this swell, was my band, The NOR'EASTERS.

You say Nor'easter I say Sou'easter. One thing's for sure, it was a POST EASTER SWELL that had all the points and reefs firing on Day I. And the beaches lit up on Day II. So, here it is. Two days of non stop action with a rocking all original soundtrack by The NOR'EASTERS. Enjoy it. Oh by the way, it's 18 minutes long. I know, the horror of having to sit through a surf video
that's longer than 30 seconds sounds like torture to some of you. I say "Suck it up butter cup!" I promise you all, that Facebook and Instagram will still be there after you watch this. Shot in 4K so watch in 1080 or higher.

GO SLO GO PRO 15 Years with the Go Pro.mp4
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

THIS MIGHT BE BORING to some of you. It's 15 years of Go Pro footage that I've shot using the Hero II, III, and V. It's just under 30 minutes in length and 90% of the footage is slow motion (hence the boring comment). Truth be told, you have to use Slow Motion when editing water footage. It just happens too fast otherwise. And you lose the detail and beauty of the waves themselves. I have always been fascinated with the mechanics of a wave. How they form and break, and of course, the pure stunning beauty of the empty hollow wave. This is not Pipe or Chopes. And it's NOT New Jersey. Far from out it.
It's mostly fun sized waves being surfed by local surfers. My biggest regret is I didn't capture all of my friends. It's 15 years worth. And while I love being in the water shooting, my best footage has always been shot on dry land.
In my honest opinion, you can't beat these little cameras. They shoot great HD quality video and they are fun to use. Music is by the Adobe library and the Free YouTube music. Links are: www.ralphspic.com www.gopro.com

SPRING EQUINOX 2022.mp4 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

Spring Equinox. The first day of Spring, March 20th, 2022. Followed by another Spring swell on March 26th, 2022 and then the big swell. April 8th, 2022. The day my 4th grandchild was born. Her name is "Malia" and it means
"Of The Sea." The music is by my two bands The VINNY Band and The NOR'EASTERS. The first song is called The WHIFF and the last song is called UPSIDE DOWN.
Both songs were produced by The CARS Drummer David Robinson.

The whole video is under 10 minutes. I know that seems like an eternity to some of you younger folks. But I don't care. I have said this before, and I'll say it again. I make surf movies, not Tik Tok clips.

WINTER STORM KENAN 2022.mp4
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The fourth consecutive winter storm video that I shot and edited in January of 2022. This one was named KENAN. It was also known as a Bomb-O-Genesis, or Bomb Cyclone, or a Big Ole Nasty Nor'easter. We got over 2' of snow with high winds. The surf never got really huge, but it was big enough to warrant me shooting.

The music is written and performed by J. Ciarmataro qwillmusic.com

Winter Storm IZZY January 17th & 18th, 2022.mp4
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

This was shot as it happened. Day by day, hour by hour. In the exact sequence. Not a single frame of slow motion. I make no excuses for its
length. 13 minutes long. Look, I make surf movies, not surf commercials or
Tik Tok videos.

The music is by my super talented nephew J. Ciarmataro.

Of Sun, Sea, And Smoke.mp4 from
SURF FREE OR DIE
on Vimeo.

Saturday January 15th, 2022. One of the coldest days that I can remember
(and I've been around this block of ice a few times).
Single digits, with a wind-chill factor way below zero.
I got Frost Nip on my fingers. Took me hours to get some life back in them.
But having said that, the local crew were out and making it one of the
most dramatic videos I've ever shot.
I'm still cold just thinking about it
.

SNOW DAY With Jon Kiskinis 1-7-22.mp4
from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo. I shot this video of Jon Kiskinis at The WALL in Hampton, NH during the Snow Storm on January 7th, 2022. This has been done before. Hell I've made my share of "Snow Storm" videos. But if you've never seen one before, here's your chance.
Best Of Luck at SURFLINE Jon!

Nicaragua from Brayden Rudert on Vimeo.

Always happy to share Brayden Rudert's videos here. This is one he shot and edited from his trip to Nica last summer. This edit features a handful of local Hampton locals. Kody Grondin, Matt Colby, Mikel Evans, and Max Fatello. The video is cool and so is the music. And boy couldn't we all use warm tropical water.

DECEMBER 9th 2021.mp4

This is clearly a sign of the times we live in. I shot this footage the morning of 12-9-21, and did the edit the same afternoon. And less than 9 hours later, I finished the edit and posted it on social media.
This would have taken me weeks to finish back in the day when I was
shooting in Super 8mm.
Music is by the Adobe Music library. They have a great selection.
Anyway, HAPPY HOLIDAYS! PEACE ON EARTH
Watch in 1080 or higher. I shot this in 4K.

SURFER'S PADDLE For Greg Smith from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The traditional Surfer's Paddle for Legendary NH Surfer/Skier Greg Smith
on October 24th, 2021 at The Rocks. This was one of the Top 5 Paddles I've ever been involved in. Greg Smith was a true legend. The video is long compared to most edits, but to hear the true Greg Smith stories is worth it. Thank you to all who helped out in the paddle. From the photographers, to those who spoke, and to those who came to pay their respects to a true New Hampshire legend. Special thanks to the Grondins for hosting the after hours gathering. Keep Paddling Greg. Keep Paddling Brother. "A Hui Hou."

Please donate to Greg's daughter Sofia Smith Go Fund Me Scholarship Fund.

The local surfers here in New England have been charging all winter. Look for Weston Rogers, Jesse Gould, Max Fatello, Joel Feid, Lenny and Kai Nichols, Johnny and Perry Reynolds, Steve O'Hara and a host of others. The music for this clip is Robin Trower.

Because the newer version of DREAMWEAVER no longer has a Rollover feature I will simply place both BEFORE and AFTER images side by side. This is what happens when you get caught doing something stupid.

"Take that leash off son and let some of that water out of your suit."

(Above) Free advice. Take your leash off at the water's edge. Same thing when you paddle out. Put on your leash down on the beach. Take off your leash when you leave the water.
